The Cooperative Store, Sollas, North Uist / by Christoph Corves

Sollas is a small crofting community on the northern end of North Uist, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. This photo shows the cooperative shop, a great place to buy your fresh fruit and vegetables and just about anything else you may need for many miles. Providing your family with food was much more difficult in the 19th century. In the 1840s, the inhabitants of this area suffered badly from the potato famine. During the Highland Clearances, hundreds of people were evicted from this area. For information on the Battle of Sollas check out Wikipedia.
